Edward Burnett talks to Hana Canhasi about her new release, engineering and festivals. EB: Hello Hana, how are you doing? What have you been up to since we last spoke? HC: Hi Edward! I'm currently doing good! I think the last time we sat down together was two years ago? I would say we have a lot to catch up on. EB: So let’s move straight to the present, what are you working on now? Your new project ‘Let Them Talk’ is out on Friday, tell me a little more about that? HC: Yes! It's my first mini project. It is a two pack of two perspectives of a relationship being told. My producer, Elliott and I have been working very precisely for the past couple of months to develop a distinct sound with these songs. So far I've only released singles so this allows me to let the audience in a bit closer. I hope some people catch on to the hidden Easter eggs as well. EB: So what about these Easter eggs you mention? Is there anything that you can exclusively reveal in this interview? HC: One thing I can say is the easter eggs for the project came out prior to the announcement of the project. One easter egg ties into the disconnect between the perspectives of the songs and the phone line being disconnected in the cover art. The storyline of this project is actually backwards as well. I don't want to give too much away because I like to open it up to other perspectives as well. EB: So you feel it’s important that your listeners can make up their own opinions and theories about what your music is eluding to? That way it reaches and affects more people, no? HC: Yes, I think fan theories are almost a crucial part of being an artist. I definitely help guide the narrative but at the end of the day, as soon as those songs hit streaming platforms, they aren't fully mine anymore. EB: What, as an artist, is your proudest moment or achievement to date? HC: Hmmm good question. I would say it was a show I did this year when I had people not only singing but screaming my own lyrics back to me. no matter how far I go, I can't imagine that feeling ever getting old. Also when one of my favorite underground artist started following me and now we have each other's phones numbers. That's a pretty surreal feeling. EB: Talking of shows, do you have many gigs planned for this year? Would you ever want to play at a festival too? HC: Even with the year coming to an end, I think we're gonna squeeze out one more show. I'd love to do a festival, I feel like it brings a whole different atmosphere to live music and would definitely make me step outside my comfort zone for performing. EB: What is the best festival you have been to yourself and why? HC: I've actually never been to a big festival so that's why I think it would definitely have me step out my comfort zone because I only know what to expect from videos I've seen. EB: That’s a revelation right there [laughs], how about gigs then? What is the best show you’ve ever been to and why? HC: Oh hands down Drake and Migos when they were touring together. We were front row and I made eye contact with drake and takeoff multiple times. It's a little flex for me [laughs]. EB: Aside from the music, what else have you been up to? You graduated since I last spoke to you, didn’t you? HC: Yes I have! I have been working full-time at an engineering firm and recording a lot more than I used to. Sometimes I feel like there's not enough hours in the day and if you ask anyone close to me, they'll tell you my minds running through 2400 thoughts a minute because of all the things I am working on at once. Whether that's from my day job or through projects with my music, I don't think I've ever been busier. I see that as a blessing though. EB: So where does your future lie- music or engineering? Or perhaps a mix of both? HC: Oh music 100%. If you are able to pursue what you actually love and make a living out of it? That's how you win in life. EB: Well let’s hope you can continue engineering a career in music then! So finally let’s do the classic desert island question. One album and album only for the rest of your days, what are you picking and why? HC: Oh yes, the classic question. I can't say the rest of my days but definitely an album that helps me get through some days is 21 Savage’s ‘Savage Mode II’. It helps drown out overthinking. EB: Great choice there! Personally I’m more of a fan the first ‘Savage Mode’, especially ‘No Heart’ which is one of my all time favourites! Thanks for taking the time to sit down and chat, and best of luck with the new release!
